- Madrid municipal belongs together
with Carmen municipal to the rice district in Surigao del
Sur. Following the highway from Surigao City through the
province of Surigao del Norte and through the northern parts
of Surigao del Sur, which is a mountainous area, you reach
the flat fields right after passing the municipal of
Cantilan which border to the municipal of Madrid. After a
journey with hillsides and jungle on one side and the
Philippine Sea on the other, large green rice fields spreads
out. Sometimes you can only see big brown squares, that is
the time right after harvest and the new planted rice have
not yet grown up.
-
- Madrid is a small municipality and
contain small villages of the
tribe Manobo that is called Sitio.
- The fact that one of our co-operators
in the Filipino Tribe organisation lives here has also led
to that FTMW has decided to take responsibility of the
children that lives here and to
try to change their situation.
- Here lives no "children of the
street", the problem is inversely. As the parents need to
work every day in the week in the fields, the elder children
has to take care of the home and their younger siblings.
Among our sponsor children there is girls that is taken care
of by their elder siblings. It is extremely important that
they all get a chance to come to the school and get an
education of their own, to learn how to read and write, math
etc. without being stressed of the responsibility of taking
care of their minor siblings at home.
Several of the sponsor children that we
introduce for you are from Sitio Tiguis in the village Magsaysay
outside the centre of Madrid, but also from the villages of San
Vicente and Quirino. The majority of the children belongs to the
tribe of Manobo and has ended up outside the society. We want to
give them hope and faith for the future in that they through
education becomes a natural part of the Philippine society. |
