Taganito is located on the
north-eastern corner of the great island Mindanao, where the highway
from Surigao City turns south to follow the east coast. In Taganito
exists one of the largest iron deposit in the world, by mining
company Taganito Mining
Corporation TMC.
TMC is the biggest employer
and is also the reason for the village development and existence. Taganito
can in this way be compared to the town Kiruna in Sweden and its
relation to its mining company LKAB.
TMC has a special department called
Department of relations, which work is to care the relations
between the company and the local population. |

To avoid sabotage and other
damage, they tries to meet the need of the local people and tribal.
Among other, a school has been
built, Tribal
Communication Learning Center TRICOM,
which purpose is to educate the tribal of Mamanwa. A village is also
built for them, and work is offered in the mining.
Annually to Christmas, a party
is held for Mamanwa in the TRICOM centre, when food and beverage is
offered. |
Filipino Tribe Mission Welfare
has ignited a cooperation with TMC in that FTMW now reach the
tribal children on this site and in Urbiztondo, through their
teachers Edelina Peraz and Melly Dagasdas.
Mamanwa has until today very
poor education since they lack knowledge of Tagalog and English.
Many discriminate them as well, not to start in public elementary
school. |

It is a part of Filipino Tribe Mission Welfares
goal that in sight enable Mamanwa to be integrated in the public
elementary school and through it reach acceptance for the tribe.
To less the segregation
between the Mamanwa and the
local population, FTMW runs a godchild project in the area,
in which we will coordinate for common development in which
children's of different cultures learn from each other. |
